The world’s leading library technology provider, bibliotheca, has announced today the launch of open, a complete solution that enables libraries to maintain, or even increase, their opening hours and provide greater access to facilities and services to its patrons.
open+ is the first solution of its kind in the UK that can automatically control and monitor building access, self-service kiosks, public access computers, lighting, alarms, public announcements and patron safety to allow library branches to be automated during hours when staff are not available.
With open+, libraries can decide the hours they operate under normal staffed conditions and hours that the library should be open with no staff onsite yet still accessible to the public. With this system, libraries have the flexibility of either maintaining their existing opening hours or extending operating times to provide their community with more choice on when and how they can access the library and its facilities.
Darren Ratcliffe, bibliotheca’s UK Managing Director, comments: “pressure on library service funding does not need to result in a reduction in library opening hours. open+ provides a wrap-around service to complement your available staffed library hours with an automated service. This makes it possible for libraries to protect or even increase opening hours, despite budget pressures, giving communities the choice of how and when they engage with their library. Using automated technology alongside skilled librarians can significantly increase accessibility and evolve the library space to increase membership, footfall, patron choice and long term service resilience.”
Typically, open+ is used to complement the existing staffed rural or remote libraries where budget pressures mean that opening hours during the day are under severe pressure. Using this solution, a library can, for example, choose to open an additional 2 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening – at no additional cost.
Although new to the UK market, bibliotheca’s open+ solution has been implemented in libraries in the Nordic region for over 6 years and is currently installed in over 130 libraries with commercial trials already underway with 5 customers around the UK.
bibliotheca is dedicated to the development of solutions that help libraries connect with users in unique ways and provide engaging experiences, allowing them to continually evolve their library services for the changing needs of their communities. Their products are designed to provide a welcoming, intuitive and seamless environment for those that use the library – wherever they choose to use it - be that at home, on the move or within the library itself.
With over 30,000 libraries as part of their family, they have installed and continue to support more than 10,000 self-service units, 6,000 security systems and over 650 Automated Materials Handling (sorter) systems. In addition, the cloudLibrary™ digital platform powers eBook and eAudiobook lending at a further 3,000 libraries.
