Leading RFID technology provider, bibliotheca, has announced today the completion of its project with Norfolk Libraries that has seen over 100 self-service kiosks upgraded in order to meet the Library Service’s IT objectives.
A long-standing customer of bibliotheca, after implementing a full RFID deployment in all libraries over 5 years ago, Norfolk County Council commissioned the company to undertake the project of fully refreshing its entire fleet of kiosks to ensure that each system was upgraded to run Windows 7 Enterprise operating system (OS) and feature the latest version of bibliotheca’s liber8™ software - the main interface on the company’s range of self-service kiosks. Moreover, the upgrade also allowed Norfolk to introduce a secure connection to its LMS (Library Management System) in order to meet new IT regulations.
The project, which commenced in November 2013, involved bibliotheca upgrading the self-service systems in a total of 47 libraries, including the Norfolk & Norwich Millennium library - recently declared the busiest library in the country for the seventh year running with annual visits of over 1.3 million. Overall, a total of 105 devices were upgraded – either by replacing legacy kiosks with brand new bibliotheca smartserve™ 400 kiosk, or upgrading the hardware in existing smartserve™ 400 systems. Additionally, the project provided Norfolk Libraries with the opportunity to install card payment facilities in the majority of its libraries, which will allow customers to pay for a range of services via credit and debit card.
Jan Holden, Assistant Head of Service at Norfolk Library and Information Service, comments: “We wanted the refresh program to be completed as quickly as possible and to involve minimum disruption to customers and staff. The project started on the 18th November and was completed on the 12th December, ahead of schedule with the minimum of disruption to our service. To install this number of new kiosks and replace software & hardware in our existing equipment needed excellent project management, flexibility, good communication and a strong focus on the customer. bibliotheca understood this and we are extremely happy with the way they responded to the project brief.”
