Local authority Portsmouth City Council will be providing its community residents with ‘on-the-move’ self-service facilities over the coming months as it deploys self-service solutions designed by bibliotheca – the leading library technology provider – in its new mobile library vehicle.
Portsmouth will be installing bibliotheca’s smartserve™ 400 kiosk in its new mobile facility, making it easier for patrons to engage with the library service and utilise its facilities. With the smartserve™ 400, users are able to quickly and easily check-out and return their library items without the need for any staff to be present. Implementing the solution in Portsmouth’s mobile library will mean that users can borrow and check-out items loaded onto the van – without needing to visit the library.
David Percival, Learning and Engagement Manager at Portsmouth City Council, comments: “Self-service is the norm these days - it can be seen in shops and in our libraries, so why not take it to the streets? By installing self-service facilities in our new mobile library, our staff can better support the public with their need for knowledge and library services. This means that our community members will be able to visit the van even though the main library may be closed.”
To coincide with the launch of its mobile library, Portsmouth will also be revamping some of its library premises by introducing bibliotheca’s latest self-service kiosks in a number of its branches. Overall, four smartserve™ 1000 kiosks will be installed providing users with even more benefits when it comes to conducting their library transactions. In addition to a larger portrait touchscreen and faster transaction functions, users will benefit from a light-based guidance system that navigates them through the processes as they check out, renew and return their items.
Darren Ratcliffe, bibliotheca’s UK Managing Director, adds: “We love it when our solutions are used in innovative ways to help library services reach members of the community. The mobile kiosk gives patrons more choice and flexibility on how and when they engage with library services."
