Attention California Libraries: Extend open hours for free with the Libraries open+ opportunity

Califa and the California State Library invites California public libraries to apply for the Libraries open+ grant. The project provides funding to increase access to physical library services and spaces by extending open hours using Bibliotheca’s open+ access solution. open+ is a system that enables library patrons to access library buildings and resources outside of normal operating hours. Created to complement staffed library hours, the system uses cameras, sensors, and automated locks to allow visitors to access hold pick-up areas and other self-service resources.

“The open+ Project enables libraries to extend open hours by providing patrons with access to workspaces, learning spaces, and self-service library options during unstaffed hours,” says Paula MacKinnon. “Many California libraries offer all the services of commercial coworking spaces, but they don’t open until 10 a.m. Extending library open hours via open+ technologies will offer self-employed and small business customers access to the services they need to communicate, research, and work online during regular ‘office hours.’”

In use at over 850 libraries worldwide, open+ access is a fully customizable, comprehensive technological solution that allows libraries to securely open the library for self-service access when staffed, full-service is not available. open+ can be implemented in a variety of ways to meet different library service models. From extending access to an entire library or only a section of it, providing full self-service resources, or mainly a holds pick-up area, open+ allows libraries the flexibility to extend access in the way that best meets the needs of their community and space.

About the grant

The Libraries open+ grant is part of the California State Library’s “Bringing the Library to You” Mobile Library Solutions grant initiative. Ten libraries will receive funding to install open+ access in one branch. This funding includes up to $5,000 for any technical or facilities setup costs such as door alterations, installation of video cameras, or alarm system integration. The grant also covers the annual open+ subscription fee for up to 18 months. Funding is also available for travel to visit a current California open+ library installation.
