Naas Library & Cultural Centre: Where Heritage Meets a Modern Community Hub

Once a disused landmark in the heart of Naas, the former Jail and Town Hall has been transformed into a vibrant library and cultural centre — a space that now sits firmly at the centre of community life. The vision behind its revival was simple, yet powerful: to create a place where history, learning, and community could come together.

As County Librarian Gillian Allen explains, “The vision was centred on transformation… for the library to become much more than a place to borrow books. It was intended as a welcoming, inclusive hub for the entire community.”

Today, Naas Library stands as a striking example of how heritage buildings can be reimagined for modern public service, without losing their identity.

Transforming heritage into a future-ready library

Turning a historic and disused building into a fully functional, modern library came with significant challenges. The structure needed to be preserved, upgraded, and made fully accessible — all while meeting the expectations of a contemporary public service.

As Executive Librarian Oisín Cleere highlights, “One of the biggest challenges was finding the right balance between preserving the building’s historic character and meeting the practical demands of a modern public library.”

Structural upgrades, accessibility requirements, and the integration of modern services such as lighting, heating, ventilation, and digital connectivity all had to be carefully delivered without compromising the building’s original architecture.

At the same time, the internal layout needed to support a flexible mix of quiet study, children’s services, digital access, and community programming — ensuring the space could evolve with future needs.

Embedding modern library technology from the start

Bibliotheca became involved early in the construction phase, working closely with the design and delivery teams to ensure technology was fully integrated into the fabric of the building from the outset.

This early collaboration meant that RFID self-service solutions, security gates, and people-counting technology could be seamlessly embedded into the design — supporting both operational efficiency and user experience.

As Oisín Cleere explains, “Their early involvement was important in ensuring that infrastructure such as power, data, and layout planning could fully support a modern, self-service library model from the outset.”

RFID-enabled kiosks now allow visitors to borrow and return items independently, while security gates ensure smooth stock management without disrupting the open and welcoming feel of the library. Meanwhile, Open+ Count provides accurate insights into visitor flow, helping staff understand how the building is being used throughout the day.

“The renewed building acts as a catalyst for community pride and engagement, contributing meaningfully to the social, cultural, and intellectual life of Naas.”

A thriving cultural hub at the heart of Naas

Since opening, Naas Library has transformed how the community engages with library services. It is no longer simply a place to borrow books — it has become a destination for learning, connection, and culture.

As Gillian describes, “It is a welcoming, inclusive hub where people of all ages gather, learn, connect, and feel a sense of belonging.”

Visitor numbers have grown significantly, with over 180,000 visitors annually and more than 1,000 people passing through the doors on a typical Saturday. The library now supports a wide range of activity — from study and digital access to exhibitions, events, and community programmes.

Technology has played a key role in enabling this growth. RFID self-service has streamlined busy periods, particularly during peak footfall, while freeing staff to focus on more meaningful, community-focused engagement. Open+ Count has also helped the team better understand usage patterns, supporting smarter service planning.

Oisín reflects, “Staff have been able to shift their focus from transactional tasks to more meaningful, value-added interactions with library users.”

A partnership built on impact

Looking back, the collaboration with Bibliotheca has been central to the success of the transformation. By embedding technology early in the design process, Naas Library has been able to deliver a seamless, future-ready service that respects its heritage while embracing innovation.

The result is a library that is both deeply rooted in its history and fully prepared for the future — a true cultural anchor for Naas.

Gillian sums it up simply, “The renewed building acts as a catalyst for community pride and engagement, contributing meaningfully to the social, cultural, and intellectual life of Naas.”
