Library Service Continuity and Safeguards Against Cyberattacks

April 2, 2025

Libraries deserve data security beyond the basics and the buzzwords. Bibliotheca is trusted by libraries of all types because of our rigorous data protection practices and our reliable service continuity in the face of network disruptions and cyberattacks.

Knowing that libraries handle sensitive information daily and that service interruptions can be detrimental to patron needs and staff workflows, we prioritize being proactive about cybersecurity. Libraries know that they can rely on our ecosystem of products to help minimize service disruptions in the case of a network or ILS interruption or an invasive cyberattack.

We’re committed to supporting libraries with secure, dependable technology that protects both staff and patron interactions. Our store-and-forward functionality ensures that materials are accurately borrowed and returned, even during service disruptions—providing peace of mind and allowing staff to stay focused on their work.

Bibliotheca integrates encryption, secure authentication, and tamper-resistant hardware across our solutions. We respect the rights of individuals and organizations regarding their data, and we ensure all data contained in our systems is encrypted and behind secure firewalls.

Our security measures include:

  • Encryption & Access Control: Secure login protocols, Single Sign-On (SSO), and session timeouts.
  • Cyber Resilience: Enterprise antivirus, malware protection, complex password enforcement, encryption, judicious storage, restricted access, and secure cloud services.
  • Tamper Prevention: Locked kiosks, hidden USB access, full-screen lockdown on self-service screens, and single, key-secured PC access doors.
  • Privacy-First Approach: No transfer, resale, or exchange of confidential patron data, no unsolicited promotional emails to library patrons, and authentication only via patron library card numbers (and PINs if required by the library).
  • Ongoing Risk Assessment: Routine penetration testing of Bibliotheca solutions.

Bibliotheca has received a Certificate of Assurance under the U.K. Cyber Essentials Scheme, recognizing the implementation of cybersecurity best practices within the corporate network of our Manchester office.  We also carry cyber insurance to mitigate potential expenses and losses from business interruptions resulting from incidents.

We strongly recommend the installation of a library’s preferred antivirus software on relevant PCs running our solutions, and we encourage libraries to consistently update their operating systems and antivirus applications within their networks. We also know that we have an important role to play in security for libraries using our suite of products, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Bibliotheca is committed to protecting library data and following trusted security standards. We continue to support libraries with tools that prioritize privacy and reliability. Libraries are essential to their communities, and we’re proud to play a part in protecting the systems they rely on.
