Library Transformation at ACURIL 2025

June 20, 2025

From June 8 to 12, 2025, Bibliotheca took part in the 54th Conference of the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL), held in Curaçao. Widely regarded as one of the most important gatherings for libraries, archives, and museums in the Caribbean, this year’s event brought together professionals from across the region under the theme “Digital Humanities: Connecting Caribbean Communities through Archives, Museums, and Libraries.”

The conference placed a strong focus on the transformative potential of digital tools in preserving and sharing the Caribbean’s collective memory. It also highlighted the importance of inter-institutional collaboration to strengthen community connections and ensure more equitable access to knowledge. Within this framework, Bibliotheca, together with its official representative in the Caribbean, ECCA, introduced technological solutions already supporting library transformation around the world.

ACURIL: A Strategic Platform for Caribbean Libraries

Since 1960, ACURIL has established itself as a key platform for professional development, regional cooperation, and the exchange of successful practices in the information field. Its annual conference is a critical meeting space for professionals seeking to expand their impact from within memory institutions.

At the 2025 edition, Bibliotheca and ECCA had an exhibition stand, engaged in conversations with industry leaders, and demonstrated self-service and digital access solutions tailored to the unique needs of Caribbean libraries.

Technology in Service of Digital Humanities

In alignment with the conference theme, the solutions presented by Bibliotheca and ECCA addressed the need to enhance access, preservation, and knowledge circulation through reliable, sustainable, and user-centered technologies.

Featured products included:

  • selfCheck 2500: a new, more compact self-service station that streamlines material circulation, reduces queues, and promotes user independence.

  • cloudCheck tablet: a compact and efficient self-service station, ideal for libraries with limited space. It enables users to borrow and return materials independently, with full integration to the library’s ILS.

  • open+: a solution that extends library access beyond traditional hours, allowing spaces to operate autonomously and securely without continuous staff presence.

  • Hublet: a digital tablet lending system that allows visitors to access educational, cultural, and recreational content from anywhere in the library, with no staff assistance required.

These tools help Caribbean libraries expand their reach, modernize their operations, and stay connected with their communities in an increasingly digital environment.

Looking Ahead

Bibliotheca’s presence at ACURIL 2025 reaffirms its commitment to library development in the Caribbean and its belief in technology as a key driver of social cohesion, cultural heritage preservation, and broader access to knowledge.

Caribbean libraries play a vital role in connecting generations, languages, cultures, and histories. Through sustainable, intuitive, and scalable technology, it is possible to support their evolution and strengthen their mission as guardians of memory and promoters of inclusion in the digital age.
